OCR PDF to Word Converter

This OCR PDF to Word converter reads scanned documents and photos of pages and writes them out as an editable Word document: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and pictures, in reading order. The steps are Add a File, Reading, Review and Download, as Word, text, Markdown or a PDF. It runs in your browser, on your computer: the file is not uploaded anywhere. This is the free version; for larger volumes, automation or higher accuracy, contact us. The result is a draft to check against the original.

How It Works

The file is drawn as page images, open models read each page, and the result is put in reading order for review and download.
OCR PDF to Word: from the file to the downloadFour steps in order: the file becomes page images, the models read each page, the result is assembled in reading order, then downloaded.

The Word file keeps the headings, lists, tables and pictures, ready to edit. Markdown is plain text with a few marks for structure, which wikis, documentation tools and AI assistants read.

The reading is optical character recognition (OCR) by four open models: they find the lines of text, read them, find the page's layout and read the rows and columns of each table. They download once, about 200 MB, and the browser keeps them for the next visit. Their licences: NOTICE.txt.

Add a File

Choose a PDF or an image of a page, or drop it in the box.

On phones and on computers with 4 GB of memory or less, smaller models are used: quicker, but they find fewer tables and pictures.

Reading

Each page is drawn as an image and read by the models, one page at a time.

The first run downloads the models. After that, a dense page takes about ten seconds on a recent laptop; an older computer or a phone takes longer. The tab can stay in the background while it reads.

Questions and Answers

When and why should I use this converter?

When a scan, a photo of a page or a PDF without selectable text has to become a document you can edit, in Word or as Markdown for a wiki or an AI assistant. The converter reads it on your computer, so a confidential document never leaves it.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read by your browser and stays on your computer; only the models are downloaded, once. After that, the converter works without an internet connection.

Is the converter free?

Yes. It needs only an email address for the link that opens it, and has no limit on documents or pages; a long document is read 30 seconds at a time, each time you choose to continue. For faster or more accurate reading, or automated conversion, send an enquiry.

Limitations

  • Formulas are kept as pictures, not converted to text.
  • A table without ruling lines can lose the boundaries of its columns; one with merged cells comes out as HTML in the Markdown.
  • Handwriting, faded copies and text at an angle read less well than clean print.
  • Pages in Cyrillic, Greek or Arabic script are not read.
  • Page numbers, and headers and footers repeated from page to page, are left out.
  • Text inside pictures and charts is not written out.
  • A digital PDF, one with selectable text, is read from its images like a scan.
